“There is vulgarity that arrives shouting and vulgarity that has been polished until it is permitted into the better room. C'est Chic belongs firmly to the second category.”

Anekdote: I once played this album while rearranging several glasses on a sideboard. By the third track they had begun to look expensive. They were not.

“Many films take place inside beautiful rooms. This room permits a film to happen inside itself. There is an important difference.”

Anekdote: The first time I watched this film I became distracted by the curtains. The second time I noticed the mirrors. It took a third viewing before I realised there were also people in the room.

Bemerkung: A true Wohnzimmerfilm. The furniture performs with admirable discipline.

Achtung: You may find yourself rearranging your living room afterwards. This is considered a normal side effect.

Somewhere in Windenberg this record drifts gently from an old radiogram while someone irons a blouse with almost religious concentration.

Traumzustand: sonntäglich, geschniegelt, cocktailwarm

“This record never hurries. It assumes that the room has already been prepared and the curtains have accepted their responsibilities.”

Anekdote: I once heard this album through an old valve radiogram. The furniture immediately appeared older, wiser and considerably more expensive than it actually was.

Bemerkung: Excellent background music for arranging flowers, polishing glass or waiting for guests who may never arrive.

Achtung: Listening for extended periods may cause ordinary sideboards to acquire unexpected dignity.

This may appear to be the odd guest at the table because it predates the polyester confidence of the 1970s. Yet its immaculate colour design, carefully staged suburban interiors and emotional architecture provide one half of the Maze Majestic Sleaze equation. Imagine these rooms slowly absorbing synthetic curtains, latex gloves, smoked glass and discount supermarket promotions over the following twenty years. The result would stand remarkably close to Windenberg.

Traumzustand: herbstlich, farbgeordnet, höflich unerträglich

“Maze Majestic Sleaze did not suddenly arrive in the 1970s. It had already been arranging the furniture for years. This film supplies the colour, the emotional discipline and the carefully supervised windows. Polyester merely arrived later with several additional opinions.”

Anekdote: On my second viewing I attempted to follow only the story. This lasted approximately seven minutes. A red lampshade intervened and the experiment had to be abandoned.

Bemerkung: A true work of emotional architecture. People speak, but the rooms have prepared the conditions under which speaking is permitted.

Achtung: After viewing, ordinary curtains may appear insufficiently committed to their responsibilities.
