Traumzustand: lackiert, aristokratisch synthetisch, nächtlich

“Sophistication is safest when it has survived one small contamination.”

Anekdote: I once played the record while dusting a lamp. Halfway through the second side I became convinced the lamp had been standing in the wrong place for eleven years.

Bemerkung: A record that makes chrome, satin and emotional inconvenience seem part of the same furnishing scheme.

Achtung: May encourage unnecessary repositioning of lamps.

Fundstück: The archive keeps it because it understands that elegance and artificiality are excellent accomplices.

Glamour in Bourdin's photographs has already gone slightly poisonous. Saturated colour, staged femininity, domestic interiors and visual jokes refuse to explain themselves. For the Archive, the important territory is his ability to make an ordinary hotel room or tiled floor feel psychologically overdressed.

Anekdote: I once tried to catalogue a Bourdin photograph by clothing, then by colour, then by furniture. None of these categories explained why the carpet seemed guilty.

Bemerkung: A tiled floor can become psychologically overdressed without changing a single tile.

Achtung: Do not assume the photograph will explain what happened five minutes earlier.

Fundstück: The archive keeps Bourdin because he proves that glamour can become unsettling before it becomes grotesque.

“Control itself can become a surface.”

Anekdote: I once straightened a picture frame after looking at Newton for too long. It was already straight.

Bemerkung: The room is luxurious, but discipline has apparently been included in the rent.

Achtung: May provoke unnecessary correction of already aligned objects.

Fundstück: The archive keeps Newton where glamour becomes so disciplined that authority itself starts looking elegant.

“Some electronic music imagines tomorrow. Mort Garson imagines Tuesday afternoon.”

Anekdote: I once played this beside a fern and detected no measurable improvement. The afternoon, however, became considerably more agreeable.

Bemerkung: Electronic music becomes most interesting here when it stops announcing the future and begins accompanying the watering can.

Achtung: Plants are under no contractual obligation to respond.

Fundstück: The archive keeps it because sincere eccentricity can turn a very small domestic idea into poetry.

It belongs just before the full 1970s vulgarity arrives, which makes it especially useful for Maze Majestic Sleaze.

Traumzustand: pop-art-kühl, synthetisch elegant, gefährlich höflich

“The future is often imagined as machinery. Here it has hired a stylist.”

Anekdote: I once imagined screening this for a perfectly respectable film club. By the end of the first reel three people had silently reconsidered their furniture.

Bemerkung: Modernity becomes more interesting when it starts dressing for the camera.

Achtung: May cause white furniture to develop theatrical ambitions.
